Sabotage And Our Plans To Write

 [Edit: Oh boy, this sure was a slap together last second kind of a post that needed more proofreading than I gave it right before going to bed after not getting enough sleep the last several days before. I'm sorry for that, and I'm sorry for not sticking to my schedule. This past week I took all my writing advice and threw it out the window. I could not get my butt into my writing chair for anything. But that's how it goes, right? We have good days and bad ones (er..weeks). And since we're all a little bit prone to being saboteurs, I figured this post should be written, even as poorly as it was - I did just go through and edited it. Thanks for putting up with me.]

I'm going to do a more in-depth write up about this later, but in the meantime, I just wanted to let you know that self-sabotage happens to the best of us. I've been letting myself be lazy when I've had downtime instead of taking my own advice.

No matter how hard we try to stick to our goals sometimes vegging out on the couch wins us over. Occasionally it's a much needed mental and physical vacation, but usually, it's just us avoiding the demands of adulting. Either way, don't beat yourself up over it. Just get back at it.

How, you may be asking?  Trust me, I know how ridiculously hard it is but here's what I try to do when I get stuck in Couchville and can't get up.

Alarm Yourself

Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes (no longer than 10) and let yourself be as Facebook/Netflix/stare-into-space lazy as you want to be. When the timer goes off,  get right up and do one productive thing. Just one. Then pat yourself on the back and do another thing. Repeat as needed.

Do One "Micro-movement" Before Calling It A Day

I'm a big fan of micro-movements. I was first introduced to them by SARK, and they help me immensely. You take a job, chore, or activity, and you break it down into teeny, tiny pieces. For example, instead of saying you're going to write for an hour today when you can barely make it across the room tell yourself just make sure your laptop is plugged in, put your writing pen next to your notebook, or print out a piece of writing to be edited later. It lets you latch onto something positive when you try again the next day instead of beating yourself up over everything you didn't get done the day before.


Keep It Short & Simple. For me, it was doing my Wednesday writing prompt which led me to write this entry (which I'm greatly in need of staying on top of).  Try to do a quick writing exercise that you know will just take a few minutes to complete to take the pressure of self-criticism off of you and replace with it a feeling of accomplishment.


Bribe yourself into working. Tell yourself you can eat that chocolate you have hidden away or watch a marathon of your favorite thing on TV, whatever you have to do to get yourself back at your desk. You can ease back on the big rewards when you're feeling more motivated.

Give Yourself A Break

Go ahead and give yourself a break. Sometimes even when we want to write, and especially when we have the want coupled with a deadline that should be the perfect recipe for an awesome writing session it's still not enough to get our butts back in the writing chair. And that's okay. Don't beat yourself up over it because that will just lead you to avoid writing altogether and we definitely don't want that.

Give yourself a kick in the pants and if that doesn't work then just let yourself off the hook and try fresh later. For me, squandering writing time is the ultimate sabotage of my goals. I only have a small window of time I can write every week, and I always kick myself when I don't use that time constructively so this post was more for myself than anything else, but maybe it will help one of you out there.

  1. Ref. set a timer, I use Ref. micro movement, I use my journal template to get me going during that time - Weather, Devotion, Plans, Health, Writing Prompt. Ref. Break, I sit down with a cup of coffee on a warmer and when it is gone, my break is to get a second cup. When it is gone my writing stops and I start on my mundane plans.

Hello, Squirrels! It's been awhile, and I'm very sorry. National Novel Writing Month kicked my behind, and I almost didn't make it to 50k (but I did, woot-woot)! Just Write

I don’t know why any of us, myself included, thought that a person with ADHD would be able to stick to a publishing schedule. I guess I thought it would be good practice. Ha.

I’m amending my promise of putting out new posts every week. My new promise is you’ll get them whenever I give them to you. I think a big part of my problem was the pressure. Every Friday would dawn with no words written and then I would stress. And we know how stress leads to performance anxiety which leads to no writing.

These last few weeks I've also been very busy with house projects, prepping for National Novel Writing Month, and dealing with health issues. Speaking of NaNoWriMo, I want to talk about that today. I’ve mentioned before how helpful NaNoWriMo can be for writers who are easily distracted or tend to procrastinate. NaNoWriMo And ADHD

Despite my previous post warning about extreme deadlines that do more harm than good you’d think NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) would be a bad idea and yet as contradictory as it seems I’m a big supporter of it. In fact, I've been a participant for over ten years. Every year whether I win or lose I learn something new about myself as a writer and get a little bit better. Since being diagnosed and starting treatment for my ADHD, I've made HUGE strides in my writing success with NaNoWriMo. From first-hand experience, I think it is an excellent tool for the ADHD writer.

Sorry about the pun but it's true. The easily distracted and busy-brained are quick to get hooked on the new and shiny. NaNoWriMo is just that new and shiny thing that gets us excited and hyperfocused, and it's just long enough to keep us engaged.
